Seeing through the Sun and an update on 10 years of SOHO/MDI and SDO development
Prof. Philip H. Scherrer
Stanford University, Professor (Research) of Physics

Abstract
With the use of what could be called "Acoustic Ray Vision" we have been "seeing" through the Sun to image its far side for 5 years. Recent improvements now allow the entire far side to be imaged. This new approach will be described. The data is obtained with the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft. SOHO has just passed its tenth anniversary in the sky. The status and plans for SOHO/MDI will be described. The second generation MDI is called the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) presently in development for the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) to be launched in the fall of 2008. Data from HMI and the Lockheed provided EUV imager (AIA) with a combined volume of about one petabyte per year will be located at Stanford. A quick update of the SDO development will also be presented.
