Space: the Final Frontier in Broadband Access
Prof. John M. Cioffi
STAR Lab, Stanford University
Abstract
The advent of the information age portends the welcome technical challenge of large numbers of people demanding increasing amounts of digital bandwidth. Such demand creates interesting new problems at the physical layer of digital transmission, as well as for the network. This talk focuses on the physical layer technologies of digital subscriber lines (DSL), fixed wireless, and cable broadband access technologies, both reviewing methodologies and illustrating new challenges as data rates increase. The talk suggests that in many ways spatial coordination and unbundling strategies both impose the ultimate constraints, and simultaneously afford the solutions for broadband access.
