STAR Lab maintains many professional associations with colleagues from academia and from industry. Formal ties for research are generally through appointments as Visiting Scholars or Affiliates; collaborations involving teaching may be for Consulting Professorships. Visiting Scholars and Affiliates range from visiting students to postdocs to faculty spending sabbatical leave at Stanford, as well as visitors from industry and government laboratories.

Visiting Scholars and Affiliates collaborate on research projects underway in STAR Lab. Interaction with graduate students is an important part of the visitor's day. These collaborations are an important way to broaden and enrich the graduate student experience at Stanford.

Visitors usually are associated with a faculty member host, and are appointed upon invitation by the Electrical Engineering Department.
